We have only added Virtuemart products by using RO CSVI and have the import template settings on overwrite. The identifier is set as SKU. Still SKU's are imported double and it will take a long time to delete those one by one.
If the import based on field is set to product_sku then there is no way duplicate SKUs are imported. Can you send us the import debug log to see how the duplicate SKUs are processed?. Check

Is there a way to import without adding a product with same SKU but that it just overwrites the records?
We would like to see your template settings and debug log to see how import is processed. Please post the template XML and debug log to check. To get the template XML file, in RO CSVI maintenance menu select RO CSVI on first option, backup templates on second option, select the import template and download the XML file. Post the XML file.
