When importing variants the default_variant is not applied to the field. I tried 1, Y and Yes but no luck.
Maybe I'm overlooking something.
log, template and csv are added.

To be able to import the default_variant you also need the field characteristic_alias. You will need to add the product_parent_code as well, otherwise it won't be able to find the characteristic. Add those 2 fields and let me know if it works for you, otherwise I would want a new debug log.

For others who read this post a little update.
Yes we need the characteristics_alias as column_header and their values in this column. The product_parent_code was already there.
And a little bug was causing the strange behaviour which was fixed with a patch.
