Resolved importing your categories and id's

Hi i want to import categories and category id's for them i have made 2 columns one is called category_name & the other category_id, when using field mapper and uploading the csv file no options appear at all once the csv has been parsed, is there a specific layout required when choosing import,virtual mart,category import in the field mapper?
Also what i am trying to do is set it up so all the categories with my own category id's are ready for when i import products with category id's so they go to the correct category, if this is not possible and only the categories can be imported i can alter the category id manual in the data base. just looking for the best option. thanks.

No specific layout is needed, however you won't be able to import this file. The category import requires the category_path field.

That won't work either because the database determines the IDs.

when i import products with category id's so they go to the correct category
That is what the category_path field is for. If you must use the IDs, it is best to import that category_path and after that do an export of the categories to get the IDs. I won't advice using that, safe bet is to use the category_path.

i see what you are saying, i did see the option in the process/fields tab to choose virtuemart_product_id on imports,i take from your response this is not supported, i will find another way thank you.

You can use it for existing products but not for new products. So it is supported to some extend but it is just not recommended to use it.

For categories you would use the category_path as unique idenfitifier and for products the product_sku is used as such.
